Rayush Naturals is a climate biomaterials company pioneering a patented Vetiver (Khus) biomaterial platform that transforms underutilized Vetiver roots into multifunctional passive cooling solutions for buildings and sustainable interiors. By combining nature, material science, and traditional knowledge, we have developed bio-based products that help buildings stay cooler, healthier, and more sustainable while creating environmental and social benefits across the entire value chain. As global temperatures rise, cooling has become one of the fastest-growing sources of electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Conventional cooling systems rely heavily on electricity and refrigerants, while most window coverings are made from synthetic materials such as PVC and polyester that contribute to plastic pollution and embodied carbon. Simultaneously, large quantities of Vetiver roots remain underutilized after essential oil extraction, representing an untapped renewable resource. Our patented technology converts approximately 2 kg of underutilized Vetiver roots into each premium cooling blind through proprietary fibre extraction, Aroma Lock™ technology, aromatic yarn manufacturing, and advanced weaving technology. The unique flexible cortical fibre structure of Vetiver contains naturally occurring oil lacunae rich in sesquiterpenes, vetiverol, and other aromatic compounds. This porous natural structure reduces direct solar heat gain while allowing continuous airflow, creating a passive cooling effect without electricity. When lightly misted or integrated with low-water fogging systems, the material further enhances evaporative cooling, making it particularly effective for outdoor hospitality spaces, balconies, verandas, patios, and semi-open buildings. Unlike conventional window coverings, our engineered biomaterial delivers multiple building-performance benefits in a single product. It can reduce indoor temperatures by up to 6°C and lower cooling energy demand by 15–30%, while providing high UV protection, long-lasting natural Vetiver fragrance, washable and durable performance, suitability for humid climates, and a smooth child-safe woven structure designed for global use. The retained natural aromatic compounds continuously release a calming earthy fragrance, creating fresher indoor environments and reducing dependence on synthetic air fresheners. Our innovation extends well beyond buildings. Every product creates value from agricultural biomass that is often underutilized after oil extraction, providing farmers with an additional source of income and encouraging cultivation of Vetiver—a resilient crop known for improving soil structure, reducing erosion, enhancing biodiversity, and contributing to carbon sequestration potential. At the end of its useful life, the biodegradable biomaterial can be repurposed or composted, safely returning organic matter to the soil and supporting a circular bioeconomy. we are building a scalable climate biomaterials platform. By integrating passive cooling, biomaterial engineering, natural wellness, circular manufacturing, and regenerative agriculture, our innovation simultaneously addresses climate adaptation, climate mitigation, sustainable construction, rural livelihoods, and healthier indoor environments

Qual è il problema risolto?

Climate change is driving unprecedented increases in global temperatures, making cooling one of the fastest-growing sources of electricity demand and greenhouse gas emissions. Buildings account for nearly 40% of global energy-related CO₂ emissions, with a significant share driven by space cooling. As heatwaves become more frequent and intense, dependence on air conditioning continues to rise, increasing electricity consumption, refrigerant emissions, and urban heat. At the same time, the building industry relies heavily on synthetic materials such as PVC and polyester for window coverings and interior furnishings. These fossil-derived materials have high embodied carbon, generate persistent plastic waste, and are difficult to recycle at the end of their life. Many conventional products also contain additives that can contribute to indoor environmental concerns, while offering little benefit beyond shading or decoration. Buildings in warm and humid climates face additional challenges, including heat gain, trapped humidity, mould and fungal growth, unpleasant indoor odours, and poor indoor environmental quality. These conditions affect occupant comfort, increase maintenance costs, and often lead to greater dependence on energy-intensive cooling, dehumidification, and synthetic air fresheners. Meanwhile, underutilized Vetiver roots remaining after essential oil extraction represent an untapped renewable resource with exceptional structural and aromatic properties. Without high-value applications, this biomass delivers only a fraction of its potential economic and environmental value. The need is for scalable, nature-based materials that simultaneously reduce cooling demand, improve indoor environmental quality, replace fossil-based plastics, create value from renewable agricultural biomass, and strengthen regenerative agricultural systems.

Come si risolve?

We have developed a patented Vetiver biomaterial platform that transforms underutilized Vetiver (Khus) roots into high-performance passive cooling biomaterials for buildings and sustainable interiors. The platform integrates proprietary fibre extraction, Aroma Lock™ technology, aromatic yarn manufacturing, and advanced weaving technology to engineer multifunctional bio-based products that simultaneously provide passive cooling, natural fragrance, UV protection, durability, and circularity. The innovation utilizes the unique biological architecture of Vetiver roots, which possess a flexible cortical woody fibre network with interconnected pores and naturally occurring oil lacunae rich in sesquiterpenes, vetiverol, and other aromatic compounds. Our patented fibre extraction process preserves the structural integrity of these fibres while converting them into a high-strength aromatic yarn suitable for commercial weaving. The engineered porous structure acts as a passive thermal barrier, reducing direct solar heat gain while maintaining natural airflow across the building envelope. This enables continuous passive cooling without electricity, compressors, or refrigerants. When lightly misted or integrated with low-water fogging systems, the material further enhances evaporative cooling, making it particularly effective in hot and dry environments while remaining suitable for naturally ventilated buildings. Our proprietary Aroma Lock™ technology stabilizes and retains Vetiver's naturally occurring aromatic compounds within the fibre, enabling a long-lasting natural fragrance that enhances indoor environmental quality and occupant wellbeing without synthetic air fresheners. Combined with our advanced weaving technology, the resulting biomaterial is washable, durable, child-safe, humidity resistant, export-ready, and provides high UV protection, overcoming many of the performance limitations traditionally associated with natural fibre products. Each blind utilizes approximately 2 kg of underutilized Vetiver roots, creating a high-value application for agricultural biomass that is often discarded after essential oil extraction. By generating sustained demand for Vetiver cultivation, the platform supports regenerative agriculture, improves farmer incomes, and encourages cultivation of a crop capable of sequestering up to 15 tonnes of carbon per hectare annually while improving soil health and reducing erosion. Unlike conventional cooling systems that consume electricity or synthetic window coverings that merely block sunlight, Rayush Naturals integrates passive cooling, biomaterial engineering, circular manufacturing, and regenerative agriculture into a single climate solution. Our products can reduce indoor temperatures by up to 6°C and cooling energy demand by 15–30%, while replacing plastic-based materials with biodegradable alternatives that safely return to the soil at the end of their useful life. By combining climate-responsive material science with circular bioeconomy principles, Rayush Naturals transforms building envelopes into nature-based climate infrastructure—delivering measurable climate adaptation through passive cooling, climate mitigation through reduced energy demand and renewable materials, and long-term environmental value from farm to building and back to the soil.
