Windtracx Aero Kite Drone System

Ricevuto : Sono tutte innovazioni proposte a Team for the Planet attraverso il modulo di presentazione delle innovazioni

Windtracx is developing an innovative wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS) for ocean-going cargo vessels. The system comprises an autonomous flying Aero Kite Drone operating at 300 meters altitude, a pivoting deck station for storage and launch operations, and a Dyneema®-reinforced tether. The Aero Kite Drone system flies autonomously in figure-8 patterns at ~300m altitude, using electric motors for take-off/landing and wind power for flight. It offers higher thrust efficiency with a smaller surface area compared to soft kite systems and avoids the deck-space and hull-modification costs of rotor/suction sails, as well as the collapse and reliability risks of soft kites. The system delivers significant annual fuel reduction, translating to combined fuel and regulatory cost savings per vessel annually.

Il progetto in dettaglio

NB: questo modulo deve essere compilato completamente dalle persone che propongono l'innovazione.

Qual è il problema risolto?

The global shipping industry faces an unprecedented regulatory crisis, with new regulations (IMO Global Carbon Tax, EU ETS, FuelEU Maritime) transforming environmental compliance from a voluntary best practice to an existential business imperative. Maritime transport accounts for 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and current solutions are either insufficient, costly, or have limitations. Existing wind-assisted propulsion systems (WASP) have challenges: deck-based systems can obstruct cargo operations and require hull modifications, while passive kite systems are wind-dependent for launch/recovery and have limited controllability. This leads to increased transport costs and potential penalties.

Come si risolve?

The Windtracx System is an autonomous, rigid-wing Aero Kite Drone that flies at approximately 300m altitude. It utilizes electric motors for take-off and landing, and wind power for flight, acting as micro-turbines to recharge onboard batteries. The system is tethered to the vessel by a Dyneema®-reinforced tether and launched/recovered from a pivoting deck station. This approach provides higher thrust efficiency, durability, and fully autonomous operation, overcoming the limitations of passive kite systems by decoupling critical flight phases from ambient surface wind.

Chi sono i potenziali clienti?

Windtracx has achieved TRL5 with a functional prototype and has 6 Letters of Intent (LOIs) in place with partners. They have also submitted proposals for public funding (Horizon Europe and Kiat) and are in advanced discussions with D'Amico International Shipping (fleet of 33 vessels) for a standard system installation, and a U.S.-based shipowner willing to pilot-test the system.

In che modo questa soluzione è diversa?

Windtracx differentiates itself through its rigid-wing, high-altitude kite drone architecture, offering: 1. Higher flight efficiency and traction due to high-altitude winds and dynamic flight path. 2. Fully autonomous operation with active take-off and landing, independent of surface wind conditions. 3. Minimal deck footprint and no hull modification required. 4. High durability and low maintenance due to composite materials. 5. Zero interference with cargo operations. 6. Superior IRR (30%) and faster payback period (3.5 years) compared to alternatives.
