LOVR™

Received : Here are all the innovations Team for the Planet has received through its innovations submission form

At revoltech, we develop sustainable alternatives to animal and synthetic leather. The production of these two materials emits roughly 517 Mil. t of CO2 equivalents per year, nearly 1% of global emissions. Neither is fit for a circular economy, meaning that both can't be (truly) recycled or bio-degraded. Their global consumption represents a € 200 B+ annual market. Our first product, LOVR™, is USDA-certified 99% bio-based, completely plastic-free and reduces CO2e emissions by 98% compared to animal leather. It is leather-like in look and feel, which has allowed us to generate 50 paying customers to date. In addition, we have proven its industrial-scale production by producing over 20 tsd. m2 over six production runs with our manufacturing partner. By working with a partner instead of building new industrial-scale production lines, we gain access to the industrial scale without large capital requirements, stay flexible in our scale-up and can offer LOVR™ cheaper than animal leather from day 1. Over the next 10 years, our business plan aims at preventing the emission of 50 Mil. t of CO2e by replacing animal and synthetic leather in Fashion, Footwear, Interior and Automotive. In addition, LOVR™ is bio-degradable due to its 99% bio-based and 100% plastic-free composition, and it can be recycled back into the original production process. This allows for the production of ultra-low footprint, circular leather goods.

Detailed project

What is the issue addressed?

See detailed description: Animal and synthetic leather are responsible for the emission of roughly 517 Mil. t of CO2 equivalents per year, nearly 1% of global emissions. Our industrial clients face a rise in regulation aimed at reducing CO2-emissions and promoting circular product design, which we enable with LOVR™.

How is the problem solved?

See detailed description: LOVR™ reduces CO2e emissions by 98% compared to animal leather and by 73% compared to synthetic leather. It bio-degrades in 9 months where animal leather takes decades to break down and synthetic leather takes millenia. It is also recyclable back into the original production process - leather can be down-cycled to bonded leather once, synthetic leather can't be recycled at all due to its multi-layer, multi-material structure.

How is this solution different?

LOVR™ solves the issues described above: It is leather-like in look and feel, it is produced on existing, industrial-scale machinery and it is completely plastic-free. Especially the leveraging of an existing industrial production process will allow us to win in the alternative leather space - by eliminating the "green premium" that many of our competitors have to charge.
