4MyCiTy has developed an integrated circular food-system platform that helps communities prevent edible food from becoming waste, redirect nutritious food to families, compost unavoidable organic waste, and measure the environmental and social impact of every activity. The innovation connects food donors, nonprofit organizations, residents, volunteers, and composting operations through one coordinated system. Surplus food is collected from farms, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and other food businesses before it enters the waste stream. Edible food is distributed at no cost through community-based locations, while food that is no longer suitable for consumption is diverted to composting rather than being sent to a landfill. Our digital platform supports the entire process. It records food-rescue volumes, participant pickups, compost returns, household savings, volunteer activity, and estimated greenhouse-gas reductions. Each participant has a unique digital profile that allows the organization to track engagement and environmental impact over time. The platform also provides families with information about the food they receive, including nutritional benefits, recipes, storage guidance, and strategies for reducing household food waste. This model addresses climate change because discarded food generates greenhouse-gas emissions throughout its entire lifecycle. Energy, water, land, transportation, refrigeration, and labor are used to produce food that may ultimately be thrown away. When organic waste decomposes in landfills, it also releases methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. By keeping edible food in use and converting unavoidable organic waste into compost, our system reduces landfill disposal, prevents methane emissions, and returns nutrients to the soil. Unlike a traditional food-distribution program, the 4MyCiTy model integrates food recovery, community access, composting, workforce development, and real-time impact measurement within a single system. Since 2018, 4MyCiTy has used this approach to rescue and distribute more than 300 million pounds of food and divert millions of additional pounds of organic material from landfills. The innovation is designed to be replicated. Our next phase will allow other nonprofits, municipalities, food businesses, and community organizations to use the platform and operating model in their own regions. This would enable local organizations to coordinate resources more efficiently, demonstrate measurable climate impact, and build circular food systems that benefit both people and the planet.

What is the issue addressed?

Food systems waste enormous quantities of edible food and organic material, causing avoidable landfill methane emissions, wasting the water and energy used to produce and transport food, and leaving communities without reliable access to nutritious food or coordinated tools to recover these resources.

How is the problem solved?

Our platform connects food recovery, community distribution, and composting in one traceable system. It uses digital check-ins, QR-based tracking, item-level weight data, and impact calculations to direct edible surplus food to families, identify unavoidable organic waste for composting, and measure the food recovered, waste diverted, and estimated emissions avoided. This creates a closed-loop process in which food is used at its highest value, organic material is kept out of landfills, and the resulting compost is returned to the community.

What is the customer target?

4MyCiTy is the platform’s first full-scale operating customer and testing environment. The system currently supports 8,146 registered community members, all of whom are also enrolled as compost participants, and manages daily services reaching approximately 300–350 households. Since 2018, our operating model has rescued and distributed more than 300 million pounds of food. In 2025 alone, we rescued approximately 44 million pounds of food and diverted an additional 15 million pounds of organic material through composting. The platform is supported by active relationships with farms, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, government agencies, and community partners. We are preparing to make the technology and operating model available to external nonprofits and municipalities. We have not yet generated software-licensing revenue; the current phase is focused on validating the platform through our own high-volume operations before commercial deployment.

How is this solution different?

Unlike solutions that focus only on food donation, transportation, resale, or composting, 4MyCiTy integrates the entire circular process within one community-powered platform. We rescue and distribute edible food, divert unavoidable organic waste into compost, track each participant’s economic and environmental impact, provide personalized nutrition and storage guidance, and create green workforce opportunities. The model is already operating at scale and is designed for nonprofits and municipalities to replicate in other communities.
