Flint Paper Battery

Recibidas : Estas son todas las innovaciones que Team for the Planet ha recibido a través de su formulario de presentación de innovaciones

Flint has rebuilt the battery from first principles. Conventional batteries, the ones inside your mouse, your TV remote, your child's toy, are made with lithium, cobalt, nickel, and PFAS. These materials are mined under conditions linked to deforestation, ecosystem destruction, and human rights abuses, processed using toxic forever chemicals, and disposed of in ways that contaminate soil and water for generations. Over 15 billion of these batteries are sold every year. Flint replaces all of that with cellulose, the same material plants are made of, sourced from agricultural waste in Asia that was previously burned or discarded. Our cellulose hydrogel acts simultaneously as the electrolyte, separator, and structural scaffold of the battery, combined with zinc and manganese electrodes. The result is a rechargeable battery with no lithium, no cobalt, no nickel, no PFAS, and no flammable electrolytes, one that is fire-safe, non-toxic, and compostable within six weeks. Manufacturing uses ambient-temperature, water-based processes, no toxic solvents, no dry rooms, no high-temperature sintering. This means the process is cleaner, cheaper, and replicable in emerging markets that conventional battery factories cannot reach. Verified figures show approximately 88% lower emissions per cell compared to a conventional equivalent (~6 gCO₂e vs ~50 gCO₂e), equating to ~211 tCO₂e avoided annually at current production and ~13,200 tCO₂e annually at full scale, subject to final product carbon footprint verification. Flint launched two commercial products in November 2025: the ultra-thin pouch cell and AA/AAA cylindrical cells. We have signed $2 billion in letters of intent and are working with over 20 global brands including Apple, Logitech, LEGO, and Amazon. We hold 36 patents globally and have been recognised with the Keeling Curve Prize 2026, UNDP Climate Systems Innovation Award, and Best of CES Sustainability Award by CNET. The mission is simple: make the toxic battery the exception rather than the rule.

¿Qué problema se ha resuelto?

Over 15 billion batteries are sold annually, each relying on lithium, cobalt, and nickel extracted under conditions linked to deforestation, biodiversity loss, and human rights abuses, processed using PFAS, synthetic forever chemicals linked to cancer and long-term environmental contamination, and disposed of in systems that do not exist at scale across the Global South. These batteries are nearly impossible to safely recycle, and their toxic burden falls disproportionately on the communities and ecosystems least responsible for creating it. The battery powering the clean energy transition is itself one of the most environmentally destructive products on earth.

¿Cómo se resuelve?

Flint's cellulose hydrogel functions simultaneously as electrolyte, separator, and structural scaffold in a zinc-manganese electrochemical cell, replacing three conventional components with one plant-derived material and eliminating lithium, cobalt, nickel, and PFAS entirely. The cell is manufactured using ambient-temperature, water-based, roll-to-roll processes that require no dry rooms, no high-temperature sintering, and no toxic solvent recovery. Raw materials are sourced from agricultural cellulose waste in Asia. The finished battery is fire-safe, leak-proof, non-toxic, and compostable within six weeks at end of life, requiring no specialist disposal infrastructure. Verified lifecycle data shows approximately 88% lower emissions per cell versus a conventional CR2032 benchmark (~6 gCO₂e vs ~50 gCO₂e), with ~13,200 tCO₂e avoided annually at full production scale of 25 million units per month.

¿Quiénes son los clientes potenciales?

Flint launched two commercial products in 2025 and is currently producing at 400,000 units per month in Singapore, scaling to 25 million units per month through Foxconn in Hungary. Flint has signed $2 billion in letters of intent and is working with over 20+ global brands. Most advanced partnerships include Logitech, working toward becoming a supplier for Logitech's AA and AAA batteries used in its mice and keyboards at approximately 120 million units per year, and LEGO, where a development partnership is progressing toward integration into LEGO product lines. Other active partners include Apple, Amazon, Philips, Belkin, Crocs, Avery Dennison, and Verisure. $4 million has been raised to date. Recognition includes the Keeling Curve Prize 2026, UNDP Climate Systems Innovation Award, Best of CES Sustainability Award by CNET, and TechRadar Pro 2026 Picks Award.

¿En qué se diferencia esta solución?

Flint's advantage is architectural rather than incremental. The cellulose hydrogel replaces three conventional cell components in a single material, a structural innovation protected by 36 patents globally that no competitor has replicated. The manufacturing process eliminates the three largest cost and complexity drivers in conventional battery production: dry rooms, high-temperature sintering, and toxic solvent recovery. This enables production at a target cost of $50/kWh, below comparable lithium-ion at $100–130/kWh, with no green premium passed on to customers. Flint is also the only battery company whose supply chain generates rural income as a structural outcome: cellulose feedstock is sourced from agricultural waste previously burned or discarded, creating commercial value for farming communities in Asia. Finally, Flint is fully commercialised at TRL 9 two products launched, in production, with $2 billion in signed LOIs. BeFC and Imprint Energy remain pre-commercial at consumer scale.
