Restoration of large-scale forest ecosystems allowing carbon sequestration, the return of biodiversity, and numerous co-benefits for local populations.
- 900 million hectares already ready to be reforested - without competing with human activities (agriculture, cities, ...). - Lack of effective carbon offsetting solutions on a large scale - especially natural solutions (forest)
MORFO is developing a large-scale reforestation solution that combines biological symbioses, drones, and computer vision to fight global warming. Forests could account for up to 35% of carbon absorption in the atmosphere. This is the most mature solution today and one that we can really scale up. To give an idea of the solution: https://docsend.com/view/ry4dm4e5dtg62bg2 To give an order of magnitude in terms of carbon capture: - our first projects on the mining industry will capture 36'000 teqCO2 (eq. the annual footprint of 4'400 French people) - our projects that will be directly deployed on landowners over at least 30 years will capture 600'000 teqCO2 (eq. the annual footprint of 73'000 French people). Knowing that we want to deploy a hundred projects in the next 3 years. Important: the reconstitution of forest ecosystems creates numerous co-benefits for the environment and local populations (particularly socio-economic).
First, the miners who have a legal constraint and political pressure - which can prevent them from obtaining new operating permits if the ecological issues of the work sites are not respected. Second, companies that want to offset their net carbon emissions, by purchasing high-quality, nature-based credits with full transparency and monitoring of the projects in question.
Public/private collaboration (INRAe, IRD) with major innovations: - Micro-biological R&D (forest seed encapsulation technology to optimize germination rate and seedling growth) - Technological R&D to calculate biomass growth and captured carbon stocks (Machine learning & Computer vision) - Deployment of the solution and planting in a few weeks, worldwide - Unique monitoring (biodiversity, phenology, carbon, etc.) - Mature science and processes already deployed in real-life situations (100 hectares in French Guyana) The use of drones to scale up: 20 to 50 hectares per day per done (knowing that a drone pilot can pilot 5 at a time, so up to 250 hectares per day per pilot), against 0.5-1 hectare per day by a human.
